Two individuals suspected of being involved in the violent robbery and murder of a 23-year-old businesswoman in Kondele in January 2024 have been detained.

The arrests are the result of thorough investigations by Kondele police, which also led to the recovery of an AK47 used in the murder and 36 rounds of live ammunition.

The deceased woman, Grace Awino Adero, managed an Mpesa shop in Kondele.

Two armed assailants attacked her and her husband on January 27, stealing the day’s earnings and killing her. The husband managed to survive the attack.

The murderers, thought to be part of a larger gang, fled on an unmarked motorcycle and joined the rest of their group at a hideout in Kasagam, Kisumu county.

A few hours later, police in Kasagam on patrol confronted five individuals in a suspicious parked car, causing them to flee and abandon the vehicle.

Upon inspection of the vehicle, an AK47 (without a magazine), a homemade pistol capable of firing, and four mobile phones were found.

The vehicle had been rented, and the rifle, analyzed by ballistic experts at the DCI forensic lab, was found to have been either stolen or acquired from Uganda, according to the DCI.

The suspects went into hiding until April 18, when one of them, a 26-year-old former Kisumu Allstars Club footballer, was found by Kondele-based police at his hideout in Obunga, Kisumu Central.

When taken to the Winam Senior Principal Magistrate’s Court, detectives were given 14 days to complete the investigation.

After several days of questioning, the investigators determined that the leader of the gang was known as “Osama,” who is suspected of orchestrating the gang’s criminal activities.

Acting quickly, Kisumu police worked together in a sting operation at Osama’s home near Rai Primary School in Kasagam, where they arrested his 17-year-old brother, who is also believed to be part of the gang.

Inside the house, police discovered an AK47 magazine loaded with 30 rounds of 7.62*39mm ammunition, 6 rounds of .38 special ammunition, five ID cards belonging to different individuals, a Kenya Armed Forces Comrades Association card, a mobile phone, and a green camouflage bag.

The investigation is ongoing, with detectives pursuing the main suspect and other gang members whose identities have been identified.
