Ex-AG Githu Muigai Calls for Fewer Counties & Constituencies

Former Attorney General Githu Muigai appeared before the National Delegates Committee (NDCO) on Thursday, where he advocated for the consolidation of counties and constituencies.

In his address to the commission, the former attorney general requested the reduction to save taxpayers money on the cost of operating numerous electoral units.

โ€œMy personal view is that we have too many people in parliament and too many constituencies. We should be reducing the number of constituencies and counties, they are costing us a lot of money and some of them are not viable,โ€ the lawyer noted.

In addition, he objected to the demands that the IEBC chair be a jurist.

IEBC last week made their submissions before the NDC, in their submission, the independent body called on the committee to recommend the position of the IEBC chairperson be replaced by an expert in legal matters.

Githu also stated that he has no objections to Musalia Mudavadi’s position within the government.

“I have no problem with the Prime Cabinet Secretary post, I think it is a way of organizing a cabinet, the committee sittings are very difficult to coordinate, the president is busy and the deputy president is busily deputizing him,โ€ Githu remarked.

Githu clarified the role of the Judiciary in managing electoral cases, recommending that the courts, particularly the Supreme Court, cease issuing verdicts that are identical in every election cycle, thereby making them predictable.

Also in his submission, Githu proposed a committee to interrogate IEBC nominees before their approval.
