Eugene Wamalwa Storms Out Of Bipartisan Talks As Cherera Four Make Submissions

Azimio bigwig Eugene Wamalwa stormed out of the Bipartisan Talks on Thursday after an altercation with Kenya Kwanza politicians while the ousted former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners, famously known as the Cherera Four, were making their submissions.

Before staging the walkout, Wamalwa maintained the stance that IEBC did not deliver credible elections.

During the session, the former Defence Cabinet Secretary slammed the former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati for failing to appear before the National Dialogue Committee as earlier planned.

โ€˜โ€™We were hoping Chebukati would be here and he has denied the country to hear the story from both sides, the arrogance in his letter is something we will deal with,โ€™โ€™ he noted.

In a statement, Chebukati and two commissioners Prof. Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu said they will not attend the session describing the 2022 general election as a closed case.

โ€œTo participate would be to betray IEBC staff who were tortured, murdered, and a reward for impunity. Instead, a Commission of Inquiry should be formed,โ€ he said in his statement.

During their submissions, the Cherera 4 maintained the stance that the results of the 2022 presidential election announced by Chebukati were not accurate and questionable.

The Cherera 4 namely; Juliana Cherera, Irene Masit, Justus Nyangโ€™aya, and Francis Wanderi who all gave a dissenting opinion and contested the results announced by Chebukati gave their accounts to the committee.

“My last born is 7 years old. It was bad even in school. Our social life changed. It was bad for my children and my family. There are certain things we cannot say on camera because it is not a safe space,” Cherera submitted.

Irene Masit on her part said she had to go into exile after receiving death threats.

“The second threat was at night. I took a motorbike to the airport and I was the last one to the manifest. I did not report to the police because I was leaving the country,” Masit explained.

However, the Kenya Kwanza side led by National Assembly Majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah raised tough questions poking holes in their accounts.

Former IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati during the launch of the 2022 Post-Election Evaluation Report on Monday, January 16, 2023.
