Erastus Edung Sworn In as New IEBC Chair Alongside Six Commissioners
Erastus Edung has officially assumed office as the new Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). He was sworn in on Friday, July 11, 2025, during a ceremony held at the Supreme Court Buildings in Nairobi.
Alongside Edung, six new IEBC commissioners also took their oaths of office. The newly appointed commissioners are Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah. All seven officials will serve a six-year term at the helm of Kenya’s electoral body.
The swearing-in was presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome, formally marking the start of their tenure. The ceremony followed a legal process that cleared the way for the appointments after a brief court challenge.

President William Ruto re-gazetted the appointments on July 10, 2025, through Gazette Notice No. 9269 for the IEBC Chairperson and Gazette Notice No. 9270 for the six commissioners. This move came after the High Court ruled that the previous gazette notices—No. 7724 and 7725—issued on June 10, 2025, were published in violation of interim court orders dated May 29, 2025.
A three-judge bench comprising Justices Roselyne Aburili, John Chigiti, and Bahati Mwamuye nullified the earlier notices but maintained that the appointments themselves were valid. The judges clarified that the issue was only with the legal process, not the qualifications or legitimacy of the appointees.
With the new IEBC team now officially in place, they are expected to focus on electoral reforms and preparations ahead of upcoming elections. Their six-year term will be crucial in restoring public trust and overseeing credible electoral processes in Kenya.
