EPRA Shuts Down 13 Petrol Stations Over Adulterated Fuel Sales
Thursday, June 29th, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA). Released a list of 13 gas stations shut down between April and June of 2023 for allegedly selling tainted fuel.
Section 92 of the 2019 Petroleum Act requires the Authority to monitor petroleum products offered for sale on the local market. To prevent the adulteration or dumping of export-bound fuels.
In the most recent crackdown, some gas stations were shut down for selling or transporting tainted fuel, in addition to other egregious offenses.
A portion of the statement read, “EPRA implements a program of continuous monitoring of the quality of petroleum motor fuels sold, transported, and stored throughout the country.”
In a statement, the authority also disclosed that some stations had been flagged. For similar violations but reopened after paying fines of up to Ksh177,000.

Kajiado, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Kisumu, Murang’a, Siaya, Nyeri, Machakos, and Nairobi are home to some of these stations.
Other areas are, Taita Taveta, Bungoma, Vihiga, Baringo, Meru, Siaya, and Busia. During the specified time period, 7270 tests were conducted, according to EPRA.
EPRA provided the hotline number 0709366000 for reporting all violations and misconduct.
“The public is requested to report suspected cases of petroleum fuels adulteration or export dumping via the hotline number as well as the Authority’s USSD code (*363#) and SMS service code (40850),” reads a portion of the statement.
In December 2022, the authority shut down five gas stations in Kitui. Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, Kitui, Meru, and Kisumu for selling tainted fuel to unsuspecting motorists.
Following the approval of the 16 percent Value-Added-Tax (VAT) on fuel under the Finance Act 2023. the authority is expected to announce the new fuel prices on Friday, June 30.
Currently, Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene cost Kenyans Ksh182.4, Ksh167.28, and Ksh161.48 per litre, respectively.
