Energy CS Fires 5 EPRA Board Members
Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir revoked the appointments of five Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) board members on Friday.
The CS announced in a Gazette Notice that George Mwakule, Moses Murengu Mutuli, Daniel Ndonye, Mercy Muthoni Wambugu, and Caroline Gathii would promptly resign from the board of the energy regulator.
Chirchir has appointed four new members including Anthony Gachau Mbuthia, Diba Daudi, Abraham Kipruto, and Jennipher Nawoi Long’or.
“The five will be members of the Board of Directors of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from September 8, 2023,” read the notice in part.
Uncertainty surrounded the timing of the CS’s appointment of the fifth member to cover the remaining vacancy.

Since assuming office a year ago, President William Ruto’s administration has made significant changes to key parastatals and state agencies, removing former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s appointees.
Critics have asserted that the current regime fills State positions with political operatives and loyalists with no experience in government administration.
EPRA is tasked with regulating the nation’s energy sectors, including establishing prices for fuel and electricity.
Before revising power prices, Kenya Power must obtain regulatory sanction, whereas EPRA provides oil marketers with monthly fuel prices.
Chirchir made significant adjustments to the Geothermal Development Company Limited, whose mandate is to expedite the development of geothermal resources in the nation.
Hillary Koech, Nelly Yatich, Kamau Kuria, Mwenda Nyaga, and John Gicamu had their appointments at the 2008-founded institution revoked.
Boniface Lesyampe, Salome Kabando, Kipkoros Kandie, Stephen Kisaka, and Eustus Muriithi Maina replaced them.
The five new board members will serve for three years at the institution.
