Emerging Dual Threat: Kisumu Schools Battling a Resurgence of Covid-19 and Influenza
Experts in public health have advised the citizens of Kisumu to take precautions against the spread of influenza, including Covid-19.
There are dozens of infected students at five schools. The affected schools include Arina Primary School, Xaverian Primary School, Joel Omino Primary, and St. Barnabas, according to officials.
Acting County Director of Public Health Liliana Dayo reported that four of seven Seme students who underwent Covid-19 testing were positive.
“The incidence of respiratory infections is rising in Seme and Kisumu Central. “The majority of students exhibit symptoms such as runny nose, fever, and cough,” stated Ms. Dayo. Ochieng Gumbo, the leader of the Lake Region Economic Bloc’s (LREB) health pillar, noted that the influenza outbreak is concentrated in schools.
“The majority of children are not in school. We have advised principals to permit infected students to remain at home until they recover. “The adults are coping well, but the children are suffering,” Mr. Gumbo said.
The symptoms of influenza are fever, headache, sore throat, joint pain, and cough. It spreads through respiratory contact. Influenza A, B, and C viruses cause influenza in humans.

Nevertheless, it is preventable through vaccination, mask use, hand washing, and social isolation. Ms. Dayo stated that it was necessary to reinstate the rigorous Covid-19 control measures.
“We encourage residents of Kisumu to take the vaccination campaign seriously and complete the required dose,” she explained.
She warned that cases of respiratory disease will increase if Covid-19 regulations are relaxed.
Khama Rogo, chairman of the LREB Covid-19 Advisory Committee, urged residents to be vigilant in the face of a rise in respiratory infection outbreaks.
“Covid-19 is not yet over; we must live with it.” Although the flu may not be as severe as Covid-19, people must remain vigilant, according to Professor Rogo.
He noted that lax vaccination policies are a significant barrier to containing Covid-19. A portion of the population has refrained from receiving the Covid-19 vaccine due to vaccine-related myths, misconceptions, and untruths.
“Most individuals do not desire vaccination. “Get vaccinated for your safety,” he said.
