Eldoret Arrest: Uasin Gishu Senator Mandago Held

Jackson Mandago, a senator for Uasin Gishu, was taken into custody just a few hours after an arrest warrant was issued for him. The warrant was obtained because he failed to appear in court for the taking of his plea.

He was taken into custody without incident at his home and sent to the DCI regional headquarters in Nakuru.

The senator is one of three individuals who have been brought into the public eye as a result of the scandal that has engulfed Finland and Canada’s Overseas Education Programme.

Joseph Kipkemoi Maritim, Meshak Rono, and Joshua Kipkemoi Lelei are the others that hold official positions.

On Wednesday, a court in Nakuru issued the arrest warrant, which issued the order to have the senator arrested so that he can face different allegations in court.

A Kenya Commercial Bank account in Eldoret that was registered under the Uasin Gishu Education Trust Fund and used to pay for abroad university fees for students who participated in the Uasin Gishu County abroad Education Program was allegedly targeted by Mandago and his co-accused in an alleged plot to steal Ksh.1.1 billion from the account. Mandago and his co-accused face the same charges.

As a result of the cancellation of the scholarship program sponsored by Finland and Canada, there has been an outcry and a significant increase in the number of demonstrations in the county of Uasin Gishu. Hundreds of graduates and their parents have taken to the streets to obtain refunds from the county government.

To this point, Mandago has cooperated with the investigation by providing a statement to the detectives working for the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

In addition to this, he has been questioned by investigators from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on his part in the program, which was launched during the time that he was serving as Governor.
