El Nino: Kenya Met Cautions of Storms, High Temperatures in Select Counties This Week.

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has compiled a list of areas predicted to be affected by cyclones as well as those where temperatures have reached 30 degrees Celsius.

In an update issued on Tuesday, the department reported that precipitation is anticipated to persist in several regions of the country from Tuesday, October 17 through Monday, October 23.

As a consequence, some regions, including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and North-Eastern and North-Western Kenya, will experience isolated storms during the analyzed week.

Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, and Embu are the counties found on the Highland East and West of the Rift Valley.

Counties of the Lake Basin include, among others, Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, and Trans Nzoia.

The counties of Tharaka, Turkana, West Pokot, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are located in the northeastern and north-western regions of Kenya.

The department also revealed that the Coast, North-Eastern, and North-Western regions of Kenya should be prepared for average maximum daytime temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.

Included among the coastal counties are Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale.

“A few areas in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands and the Rift Valley will experience low average night-time (minimum) temperatures of less than 10ยฐC,” read the update in part.

The warning comes after the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) issued guidelines to Kenyan citizens regarding the approaching El Nino.

The authority warned of the possibility of inundation in certain areas and urged Kenyans to be mindful of their surroundings.

Citizens were also warned to avoid flood- and landslide-prone areas, such as riparian land and hilltops.

“In previous flooding incidents, urban areas have experienced clogging of the drainage infrastructure by waste, especially from packaging, textiles, and diapers among others,” read the notice in part.

“This exacerbates the flooding menace leading to loss of life and property. Further, post-consumer waste degrades our wetland ecosystems such as rivers, lakes, swamps, and oceans among others.”
