Earthquake Signals Call for Reforms: Analyst Mutahi Ngunyi Urges Ruto to Reset Administration

Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi suggests that Tuesday’s earth tremor serves as a signal for President William Ruto to initiate substantial reforms within his administration.

In response to the event, Ngunyi interprets it as a divine opportunity for Ruto to reset his government.

“The foundations of our nation have been shaken. In posh Kikuyu areas. I felt the tremor in Gigiri. The 4.2 earthquake is a sign,” he said.

“God is giving Ruto a chance to reset. From the foundation up! This is symbolic.”

President William Ruto faces mounting pressure to enact significant reforms within his administration.

Recent street demonstrations by thousands of youths underscore a demand for accountability and integrity among leaders.

Following the dissolution of his Cabinet, excluding Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi, the Deputy President’s office remains unaffected.

Ruto has announced plans for extensive consultations across various sectors and political affiliations to establish a broad-based government aimed at swiftly and permanently implementing the state’s programs.

To address the debt burden, increase domestic revenue, create more jobs, eliminate inefficiencies in numerous government agencies, and combat corruption.

Ruto emphasized that these steps would streamline the government, making it more cost-effective and productive.

He added that government operations would proceed without interruption, overseen by Principal Secretaries and other relevant officials.

President Ruto also implemented austerity measures, resulting in the dissolution of 47 state corporations.

In his State of the Nation address, President Ruto announced the immediate closure of overlapping state agencies.

“The 47 state corporations with overlapping will be dissolved and their mandate transferred to ministries and state agencies,” Ruto said.

At approximately 8:34 pm on Tuesday, Ngunyi noted a significant earth tremor lasting about 30 seconds.

According to Earthquake Monitor, a strong magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck 87 km (54 mi) from Nairobi at 8:32 pm. The quake had a shallow depth of 10 km (6 mi) and was widely felt in the region.

Due to its shallow depth, the earthquake was more intensely felt near the epicenter compared to deeper earthquakes of similar magnitude, as stated by the Earthquake Monitor.

Earthquake Monitor reported receiving unverified early reports of ground shaking, potentially due to seismic activity in or near Nairobi, Kenya, on July 16, 2024, around 17:31 GMT.
