EALA MP Kanini Kega Roasts Kenya Kwanza on Soaring Living Costs
Kanini Kega, a member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), has criticized the Kenya Kwanza government, alleging that the current administration lied to Kenyans about lowering the expense of living within one year of taking office.
In an interview with Inooro TV on Monday morning, Kega, who has recently warmed up to the current administration, demanded an apology from the government, arguing that telling the people the truth is the best course of action because it will adequately prepare them for difficult times.
During the interview, Kega refuted Kenya Kwanza leaders’ claims that the handshake between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Azimio leader Raila Odinga and the protracted Russia-Ukraine conflict hurt various sectors of the Kenyan economy.
According to Kega, politicians lack the absolute authority and influence to determine the direction of the economy.
According to the lawmaker, the economy of a country is evaluated using various metrics, such as the exchange rate and the trade balance.
In addition, he stated that Kenya’s economy is worse than that of East African nations, and the Kenyan Shilling continues to decline.

“Our biggest trading partner is Uganda. We used to export a lot to Uganda. Most of the companies were producing their products in Kenya later selling them to Uganda, but speaking today, most of the companies have shifted, they are now producing products in Uganda and then bringing them to Kenya thus affecting the balance of trade.” Kega said.
Kega argued that if the Kenyan shilling continues to depreciate, the majority of businesses will relocate to other countries, thereby denying young Kenyans employment opportunities.
In addition, Kanini Kega criticized Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, claiming that he made no effort to resolve crucial issues in the Trade Ministry, such as the trade balance in the East African market.
Kega seized the occasion to request that new Trade CS Rebecca Miano implement measures to ensure Kenyan traders have unfettered access to the East African market.
Kega questioned President William Ruto’s pledge to strengthen the Kenyan Shilling against the dollar during the same interview. Kega believes that the Shilling will continue to depreciate.
“We expect dollar exchange to go up because most of our trade partners are using their currency but in Kenya, we are heavily reliant on dollars to trade,” said Kega.
