EACC Obtains Orders To Freeze Oparanya’s Assets Worth Ksh.28.9M
Orders to freeze assets valued at Ksh.28.9 million have been issued by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) about former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, who is suspected of being involved in a Ksh.1.3 billion corruption investigation.
The High Court authorized the asset freeze for the anti-corruption organization on Thursday, pending the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
Within the directives, Justice Esther Maina prohibited Oparanya, private entities affiliated with him, their representatives, employees, or any other individual from withdrawing, transferring, or otherwise handling the blocked funds for the subsequent half-year period.
In August, EACC detectives questioned Oparanya and his spouses regarding the purported embezzlement of Ksh.1.3 billion that transpired during his dual terms as governor of Kakamega.
As per investigations, it has come to light that public funds were acquired illicitly during Oparanya’s administration via proxies and associates.

Two companies, Sesela Resources Limited and Sabema International Limited, which were contracted by the County Government of Kakamega to purchase a property in Karen, Nairobi, reportedly channeled a portion of the frozen funds.
The property, designated Olorua Ridge Development, was acquired from the Local Authorities Pension Trust Registered Trustees (LAPTRUST) for Ksh.89M.
“It is suspected that the former Governor used a company, called Tricomp Energy Company Limited, as a vehicle to purchase the house in Karen,” adds documents obtained by Citizen Digital.
EACC had previously transferred the ex-governor’s file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further proceedings after conducting comprehensive inquiries into all documented transgressions.
It is scheduled that the subject be discussed on June 11, 2024.
