EACC Grills Mandago on Uasin Gishu Scholarship Scam

Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago is currently being questioned by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) about the county’s scholarship fraud.

According to sources at the commission, the former governor recorded a statement at the Integrity Centre headquarters in Nairobi at 8 a.m. after being summoned by the commission.

Governor Jonathan Bii and Senator Mandago have reduced the controversial, multimillion-shilling Uasin Gishu scholarship program to a blame game.

Governor Bii previously distanced himself from responsibility and demanded that Mandago come clean in the scandal involving the alleged misappropriation of millions of dollars from student accounts.

In his response, Mandago refuted the allegations made against him and urged Governor Bii to assume responsibility as the county’s chief executive.

Mandago stated that when he departed office after last year’s election, he turned over all county responsibilities and performance to his successor Bii.

“When I handed over on August 25 of last year, I expected the Governor to provide leadership, and if there are any issues or challenges, he calls me to the table as the former Governor and initiator of the program,” said Mandago.

“I am accountable for all my commission and omission errors. I cannot run away from a program I created,” he said, adding that he is willing to sit down with the Governor and afflicted parents to find a solution to the program’s myriad problems.

The two leaders ultimately met to seek a resolution to the scholarship dispute between Finland and Canada. Deputy Governor John Barorot, Nominated Senator Margaret Kamar, MPs Janet Busienei (Turbo) and Samwel Chepkonga (Ainabkoi), and several MCAs were also present.

As a result of the controversy surrounding the fraud, affected parents and students have issued ultimatums demanding a refund of their money or they will cancel the forthcoming Eldoret devolution conference.
