EACC Arrests Civil Society Chairperson in Extortion Case
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has apprehended Peter Odhiambo Agoro, the Chairperson of the Consortium of Civil Societies in Kenya, as part of a broader investigation into serious allegations of extortion.
This arrest is a key development in an ongoing probe involving claims that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a State Corporation was targeted by extortionists.
According to the EACC, the investigation was triggered by a formal complaint from the CEO of the state agency, who reported being subjected to demands for a substantial bribe.
The complaint detailed an alleged scheme in which Agoro, in his capacity as a civil society leader, was purportedly seeking Sh3 million from the CEO.
The amount was reportedly intended as an inducement and facilitation fee to ensure that accusations of procurement malpractices against the CEO would not be pursued or made public.
In response to the complaint, the EACC undertook a covert operation to uncover and address the extortion attempt.

On Tuesday morning, the Commission set a trap, which involved negotiating the bribe amount from the initial demand of Sh3 million down to Sh2 million.
The operation was meticulously planned to capture the suspects in the act of receiving the bribe.
During the operation, Agoro was reportedly caught red-handed while accepting Sh1.5 million, which was part of the negotiated bribe amount. This payment was intended to be a down payment on the full bribe.
The EACC swooped in at this moment, leading to Agoro’s immediate arrest. He has since been transported to the Integrity Centre Police Station, where he will face further interrogation and legal proceedings.
Eric Ngumbi, the spokesperson for the EACC, confirmed the arrest and elaborated on the sequence of events. He emphasized that the arrest followed a well-coordinated sting operation designed to expose and thwart the extortion scheme.
The EACC’s actions reflect its commitment to tackling corruption and ensuring that such unethical practices are addressed and penalized.
