Drama as Kakamega MCAs Block Speaker From Assembly

Drama ensued at the Kakamega County Assembly on Tuesday, April 9, after a section of the Members of the Assembly (MCAs) blocked the Speaker from accessing the premises

According to the MCAs, Speaker James Namatsi failed to follow an order issued by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General, Edwin Sifuna.

The party’s SG directed the Speaker to replace the Assembly’s leader of the majority. The MCA accuses Namatsi of bias.

The commotion ensued after the members blocked the entrance to the Assembly room. While trying to force his way in, a physical altercation ensued.

A section of Azimio MCAs has in the past three weeks been attempting to effect leadership changes in the Assembly by replacing Phillip Maina with Geoffrey Ondiro as the Majority Leader.

According to Kakamega residents, the county leaders are failing the people by focusing on leadership disagreements instead of delivering services to Kenyans.

“Lack of motions in Kakamega County has been brought about by the Governor, who does not respect his Party rules,” Rapahel Welimo noted.

“The things witnessed here today at the Assembly of Kakamega are very shocking. We ask the MCAs to remember their role is to oversight. They need to stop the fights, and focus on service delivery,” Elvis Maloba noted.

In a similar occurrence in March, the same County Assembly disrupted the house, after ODM-affiliated members disagreed with the house party leadership.

The Speaker was forced to scamper for his safety, as the other ODM faction scrimmaged minutes after the opening prayer.

In a letter written by Edwin Sifuna to the Speaker, ODM revoked the appointment of Philip Maina Ondago as the majority leader and replaced him with Geofrey Ondiro Obonyo.

The house has since failed to accept and effect the changes, terming them as malicious.
