DP Gachagua to Ruto, MPs: You Can’t Oust Me

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua continued his criticism of President William Ruto on Friday, asserting that neither the President nor MPs possess the authority to remove him from office before the end of his first term.

Gachagua, addressing a possible impeachment motion in Parliament, emphasized that Ruto’s rise to power was due in part to his (Gachagua’s) involvement, with voters from the Mt. Kenya region supporting Ruto because of his presence on the ticket.

“No one can dismiss me mid-term. If someone wants to, they should consult you (the people) first. I must be allowed to complete my term. I am being targeted for speaking the truth because there is no point in spreading lies,” Gachagua declared while speaking at the Komothai Coffee Growers Cooperative Society’s AGM in Githunguri Constituency, Kiambu.

“We are ahead of those scheming against me. Let them proceed cautiously. Our people are sharp.

“We have no fools in Mt. Kenya. The people elected both President William Ruto and me because they saw me representing their interests. I am also under attack for opposing land grabs,” Gachagua added.

Accompanying him were MPs Gathoni Wamuchomba (Githunguri), Mary Wamaua (Maragua), Senator Karungo Thang’wa (Kiambu), Senator John Methu (Nyandarua), and several local leaders.

Gachagua alleged that some Mt. Kenya leaders are being financially supported by his political rivals to undermine him and diminish his influence in the region.

His remarks follow Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana’s filing of a censure motion in the Senate, accusing Gachagua of gross misconduct and insubordination.

These events unfold amid growing efforts toward impeaching Gachagua, as he has openly fallen out with President Ruto. Allegations have surfaced about an ongoing signature collection campaign aimed at ousting him.

In the last two weeks, Gachagua has visited Kiambu, one of the largest counties that delivered more votes to the Ruto-Gachagua ticket than even Uasin Gishu, Ruto’s home county.

On Sunday, Gachagua attended a dedication service at Thika PEFA Church Cathedral.

Gachagua warned Ruto against betrayal, cautioning that it carries significant repercussions.

“To my boss, President William Ruto, tread carefully and do the right thing. We should not revive tribal politics. Betrayal is something our people despise and are unforgiving about. That’s my advice, whether taken or not. Let’s focus on the work at hand and honor our promises to Kenyans,” Gachagua said.

Reflecting on the formation of the Kenya Kwanza government, Gachagua noted that their primary goal should remain serving Kenyans.

“Impeachment isn’t necessary. Our focus should be on fulfilling our obligations to the people of Kenya. I advise my boss to be wary of those who seek to incite him,” Gachagua added.

He dismissed claims that he has failed to fulfill his duties, affirming that he has successfully executed his responsibilities, particularly in reforming the coffee, tea, and dairy sectors to relieve farmers of their debts.

“I am satisfied with my work. Those claiming I haven’t performed—if the cost of production has dropped from Sh17 to Sh87, is that not significant progress?” he asked.

“Some are commenting on coffee matters without understanding how it’s grown. We released Sh7 billion to clear farmers’ debts, and I will ensure this is completed. Once done, I urge the chairpersons not to take new loans but to utilize the Cherry Fund, which has a 3% interest rate,” Gachagua said.
