DP Gachagua Responds to EALA MP Ole Sankok Over Planned Protests

Wednesday, in a lighthearted moment, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua responded to East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) member David Ole Sankok’s threats to stage demonstrations.

The lawmaker had previously pledged to protest against Azimio for what he termed the opposition’s constant sabotage of government operations.

Gachagua admonished Sankok in Narok West, Narok County, not to stage the protests but to instead address the issue with the government.

“You Ole Sankok, since we sent you to Tanzania it seems you’ve become spoilt, you are a member of the ruling coalition. Now you are saying you will lead demos. We cannot take that direction,” Gachagua said.

The EALA representative vowed to stage demonstrations, citing his exasperation with Azimio’s incessant criticism of the government over the high cost of living as his justification.

“Very soon we are going for protests. For a long time, teachers and doctors protested over salary increments, we want the prices of food products including milk, meat, maize flour, and other cereals to be raised,” Sankok said.

In 2022, Sankok was one of the final five candidates nominated to EALA by UDA.

The other five nominees selected alongside Sankok to represent Kenya at the EALA include; former Nandi Woman Representative Zipporah Kering and Fred Muteti.

Former Senator for Nomination Falhada Dekow Iman and former Senator for Mombasa Hassan Omar were also selected.

The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) is an independent legislative arm of the East African Commission (EAC).

Article 9 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community (EAC) established the organization.

Members of the EALA Legislative Assembly serve a 5-year term and are eligible for re-election for another 5-year term.
