On Monday, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua expressed openness to the idea of a prospective meeting with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, aimed at resolving the political tension that led to their estrangement during the run-up to the 2022 presidential election.

Answering queries from reporters at his Karen headquarters, the Deputy President indicated a willingness to entertain such a gathering, noting that such circumstances frequently arise.

Gachagua emphasized that the unity of Mt Kenya remains the top priority, expressing his readiness to engage with other leaders to advance this objective.

In the interview, Gachagua disclosed that he and Former President Uhuru Kenyatta had a tense verbal altercation.

He mentioned that he and the Former President had been friends for seventeen years but had a falling out for two years leading up to the 2022 election, a rift he expressed regret over.

Previously, Gachagua worked as an aide to Uhuru Kenyatta before assuming the role of Mathira Member of Parliament. However, their relationship soured when Rigathi began backing President Ruto.

Moreover, the Deputy President offered an apology to Mama Ngina Kenyatta, expressing regret for the treatment she received from certain members of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) due to her endorsement of Azimio leader Raila Odinga, deeming it inappropriate.

“The politics that we had during that period were not good, and I would never want us to play that kind of disrespectful politics again,” stated Gachagua

Gachagua also mentioned that he was content with the NADCO report, even though he had initial concerns about its conclusions.

He also conveyed his initial sense of uncertainty and dissatisfaction when the President reached out to the opposition leader Raila Odinga for a meeting, mentioning his uncertainty about what the result might be.

“I was only content after learning that Kimani Ichung’wah and Cecily Mbarire would be in the talks as I know they have our people’s best interests at heart,” stated the Deputy President.

Gachagua emphasized his goal of uniting the Mt. Kenya area, promoting a unified voice, and rejecting divisive political tactics that have troubled the voting community.
