Kilgoris Member of Parliament (MP) Julius Sunkuli was forced to part with Ksh5 million on Sunday after his initial contribution of Ksh2 million was turned down by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Gachagua was overseeing a fundraiser to reconstruct Ol Motonyi Primary School and Ol Motonyi Secondary School when he was at a church service in Kilgoris, which is located in Narok County. Gachagua was attending the ceremony.

During the event, the Deputy President gave an assurance to the management of the schools that the administration of President William Ruto would put aside Ksh10 million to support upgrades in the two institutions.

“Finally, there is this school and the junior secondary. You (congregation) asked us to help rebuild the schools. The national government will offer Ksh10 million,” Gachagua declared.

Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu of Narok, who was present at the event, made a generous offer to purchase a school bus for the two institutions. Not long after that, attention shifted to focus on Sunkuli.

“You will buy a bus. What will Sunkuli do? This work has to be divided,” posed Gachagua.

After the vice president claimed that the amount was insufficient, the lawmaker pledged to donate an additional two million shillings.

“Ksh2 million is too little. No no no no. Should he add? How much should he add? to Ksh5 million? Citizens have approved that,” the DP announced amid cheers from the congregation.

In addition, the Deputy Head of State gave a donation of one million Kenyan Shillings toward the advancement of the church.

During the ceremony, Gachagua also requested that Sunkuli, who had regained his seat after an absence of twenty years, abandon the opposition and collaborate with the national government. He was successful in obtaining a nomination from the Kenya African National Union (KANU).

After serving as the Member of Parliament for Kilgoris from 1992 to 2002, Sunkuli then moved on to become the Minister of Internal Security under the administration of the late President Daniel Arap Moi.

After serving as Kenya’s ambassador to China for a while, he ran for the Senate seat representing Narok in the 2013 general election but was unsuccessful.

During the elections that took place in 2002, 2007, and 2017, the incumbent Member of Parliament did not succeed in winning the seat.
