DP Gachagua Condemns Mombasa Governor Nassir For ‘Neglecting’ Flood-Affected Families
Deputy President Rigathi has lashed out at Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, accusing him of failing to support families affected by the ongoing heavy rains that have strongly hit the coastal region and other parts of the country.
Speaking on Tuesday in Kisauni, Mombasa, the deputy president called out Governor Nassir
wondering why he has failed to expedite mitigation measures to contain the disaster occasioned by the heavy rains.
Gachagua, who was distributing relief food to families in Kisauni, demanded that Governor Nassir immediately put on hold development projects and focus on the distribution of medical supplies and food to assist families affected by the El Nino rains.
“I want to tell the Govenor of Mombasa, Mr Nassir… utoe miguu kwa ngunia… As the national government, we shall try and purchase food. But we want the county government of Mombasa… the Governor to release the funds to buy food for the county residents. We don’t want to see any governor blaming the national government for not distributing food. As the Governor, you also have money,” said Gachagua.
“Why are you keeping money idle in the bank? Every Governor whose county has been affected by floods… suspend any other development activities and provide food, medicine, and blankets for the people. Once this crisis is over we shall go back to development issues. What is the purpose of the development projects you are doing if people are dying? If the people die, who will the projects benefit?” posed the DP.

The deputy president went on to praise the Governors of the North-Eastern Counties of Wajir, Garissa, and Mandera for their efforts in assisting the flood-affected families.
“I want to commend the Governors of Wajir, Garissa, and Mandera. They have released Ksh.50 million to feed residents in those counties. We want to see the same done here (Mombasa) and Tana River. Release funds for families to get food, medicine, and blankets,” said the DP.
“So, stop all those activities, Governor Nassir. We have a big problem here in Mombasa. It’s only your county government that has not allocated funds for the people. Don’t depend on us in Nairobi. First, play your part then we will allocate you additional funds,” he said.
DP Gachagua on Tuesday dispatched relief food to more than 1,000 families affected by the ongoing Elnino to rains in Kisauni, Mombasa County.
Gachagua asked the devolved units to enhance support to victims of the disaster by allocating and releasing funds to complement the mitigation efforts of the National Government.
