DP Gachagua Claims Lack of Consultation in Malala’s Removal as UDA SG: “They evicted him at 5 am”
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has stated that he was not consulted before Cleopas Malala’s dismissal as UDA party Secretary General.
During an interview with Agikuyu vernacular media stations on Sunday, the DP revealed that he was neither informed nor consulted about the decision to oust Malala from his position.
“Malala was kicked out at 5 am from the ruling party. I was not called to that meeting that decided to remove him from his seat,” Gachagua said.
“My aides were the ones informing me that the meeting was held at 5 am and the decision made. This should not be happening because this is the ruling party,” he said.
He emphasized that these matters should be addressed with respect and propriety, given that UDA is the party in power.
“Let us have some respect and decorum because such issues will just bring more battles in the country. We already have people battling against the Presidency, others from the Genz, the finance bill, and now we want to bring battles into the party, let us calm down and refrain from instigating more battles because we already have a lot of them.”

He called on President William Ruto to bring together all conflicting parties, including himself, the party, and other leaders, for the nation’s progress.
This follows the party’s announcement on Friday that its highest authority had decided to dismiss Malala from the Secretary-General role.
According to the party, after discussions, the vice chairperson, Hassan Omar, will assume the position temporarily.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party stated that these changes are to take effect immediately.
“Upon wide and consultative deliberations, and in compliance and accordance with its mandate under Article 8.2 of the Party Constitution, the National Executive Committee has determined to designate the Vice-Chairperson, Hon. Hassan Omar Hassan to act as the Secretary-General on an interim basis.
“The appointment of Hon Cleophas Malala as the interim Secretary General is hereby revoked,” the party said.
Malala was appointed acting UDA Secretary-General in February 2023.
