Dorcas Rigathi: Kenya’s Second Lady Speaks on LGBTQ Legalization

Second Lady Dorcas Rigathi made a brave proclamation regarding Kenya’s stance on LGBTQ+ relationships on Sunday.

In a statement sent to PoliticalPulseChat, the second lady reaffirmed that Kenya will never legalize same-sex relationships, either now or in the future.

Pastor Dorcas, speaking at an orientation forum for first-year students at Maasai Mara University in Narok County, stated that African traditions and beliefs prohibit same-sex relationships.

”In this country, it is not lawful for a man to marry a man. It is not lawful for a woman to marry a woman. It is illegal, โ€œshe said.

She also noted that no religion in the world permits same-sex marriages, which she cited as one of the primary reasons why Kenya prohibits same-sex relationships.

โ€œAfrica is not ready for that, we have our culture, we have our religion, we have our religion, I think it is time we come out and speak,” she added.

Pastor Dorcas’s comments come weeks after the Supreme Court rejected Homabay Town MP Peter Kaluma’s petition to prevent LGBTQ societies and organizations from being recognized in Kenya.

“The Court be pleased to review and set aside the judgment of this Court dated 24th February 2023 where at paragraph 79 it found and decreed that the appellantโ€™s action of refusing to reserve the name of the 1st respondentโ€™s intended NGO on the ground.”

”That Sections 162, 163, and 165 of the Penal Code criminalizes gay and lesbian liaisons was discriminatory given Article 27 (4) of the Constitution,” the ruling read in part.

The debates on discrimination of same-sex relationships and marriage have been met with strong opposition, particularly from Kenyan politicians, the most recent being Nyali MP Mohamed Ali, who led anti-LGBTQ protests in Nairobi on October 6.
