Did President William Ruto Wear a Bulletproof Vest in Nairobi? Kenyans Weigh In
Kenyans have spotted an unusual detail during President William Ruto’s recent charm offensive in Nairobi. The president has been touring the city following his much-publicized ‘handshake’ with opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Ruto and Railaโs Agreement
President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Raila’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate. They pledged to address key national issues such as youth unemployment, auditing public debt, increasing county revenue allocation, and ensuring police respect citizens’ rights, including the right to peaceful assembly.
However, Raila Odinga clarified that this agreement does not mean the formation of a coalition between ODM and UDA.
The Bulletproof Vest Controversy
On Monday, March 10, President Ruto visited Eastleigh after launching projects in Kamukunji. While addressing a massive crowd, a video surfaced online showing what some Kenyans claim to be a bulletproof vest under his shirt.
Security was notably tight, with General Service Unit (GSU) officers and plainclothes security personnel closely guarding the president. The officers maintained order while scanning the crowd for potential threats.
During his speech, Ruto instructed the police to allow the people to move closer to him, questioning why they were being held back.
Despite wearing a sky-blue shirt and dark trousers, eagle-eyed Kenyans noticed what appeared to be an outline of a bulletproof vest under his clothing.
How Do Bulletproof Vests Work?
According to Premier Body Armor, bulletproof vestsโalso known as tactical or ballistic vestsโare designed to protect wearers from bullets and other projectiles. These vests absorb and distribute the impact of bullets, reducing injury risks.
Bulletproof vests are classified into different protection levels, with some designed to stop handgun bullets while others can withstand high-caliber rifle rounds. Kevlar, a popular material used in bulletproof vests, is both strong and flexible, making it a preferred choice for security personnel and law enforcement officers.

Kenyans React
Many Kenyans took to social media to share their thoughts on the video, with mixed reactions:
- rico_artup: โHis security detail knew he was a big deal. I saw a documentary where the easiest place to own a gun is in Eastleigh.โ
- saintjhn255: โWhoever took the video must and should be a security personnel, otherwise…โ
- cee__jay7_: โWhat is he afraid of yet he is the owner of Kenya?โ
- _ken_albert: โHe does not look comfortable.โ
- Kutswajnr: โWhere is the ballistic helmet?โ
As speculation continues, neither the government nor Rutoโs team has confirmed whether he was wearing a bulletproof vest. However, the debate highlights the concerns about security and public perception surrounding Kenyaโs highest office.
