President William Ruto departed the nation on Thursday, March 14, to participate in a gathering alongside his counterparts, Samia Suluhu (Tanzania) and Yoweri Museveni (Uganda) in Zanzibar.

In his announcement, Ruto disclosed that the gathering focused on the economic and political unification of the East African Community (EAC).

Specifically, the leaders deliberated on the suggested establishment of the EAC Political Confederation, emphasizing the significance of engaging their respective citizens in the undertaking.

Suluhu also contributed by mentioning that they addressed the ongoing strife in certain areas of the EAC region, reiterating their shared emphasis on the importance of peace and solidarity.

“In their discussions, they have talked about East African conflict issues, especially the importance of speeding up the exercise of gathering citizens’ views on the structure and areas to be considered in the draft constitution of the East African Political Confederation (EAC Political Confederation).

“The exercise has already taken place in Burundi, Uganda, and Kenya and is being carried out by a team of experts made up of three delegates from each member country,” read a statement in part by Tanzania’s State House.

Significantly, the gathering occurred on the exact date as the meeting involving Presidents Museveni, Daniel Moi, and Benjamin Mkapa, during which they deliberated on tactics for establishing the EAC.

To mark the significant occasion, Museveni gifted Suluhu with a photograph from the 1996 gathering, where she had served as the host.

“As leaders among the eight EAC partner states, we reaffirm our unwavering support for further regional integration and prosperity, focusing on fast-tracking the federation.

“This vision is informed by the unity of our diverse communities, the economic benefits of creating a larger market, and the imperative of security for stability within our expanded Community,” Ruto added.

The travel plans of the President’s team were not disclosed beforehand, resulting in the Thursday meeting catching everyone off guard.

At the same time, the meeting took place as Kenya continued its efforts to advocate for the election of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

As previously mentioned by Ruto, the EAC intends to nominate a single candidate in their efforts to secure the position currently occupied by Moussa Faki from Chad.
