Details of Gachagua’s Planned Procession on Thursday

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is set to receive a heroic welcome on Thursday with a massive procession planned from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Nairobi Central Business District, ending with a major rally at Kamukunji Grounds.

According to Democratic for Citizens Party (DCP) deputy leader Cleophas Malala, thousands of supporters are expected to gather at JKIA from 8 a.m. to welcome Gachagua back from his official trip to the United States.

Speaking during a press briefing on Monday, August 18, Malala said the crowd will escort the DP in what he described as โ€œthe mother of all peaceful processionsโ€ through Nairobi before converging at Kamukunji for a public address.

Malala further revealed that the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has already been notified of the planned rally and security arrangements.

โ€œOur party leader will land on Thursday as scheduled. We urge Kenyans to show up in large numbers at JKIA to welcome him. From there, we will hold a peaceful procession to the CBD before a major rally at Kamukunji Grounds. The police must provide security and should not attempt to interfere,โ€ Malala said.

However, Malala raised alarm over an alleged plan to divert Gachaguaโ€™s flight to either Mombasaโ€™s Moi International Airport or Kisumu International Airport in a bid to detain him. He warned that supporters in both regions had been instructed to remain on standby to resist any such move.

โ€œAny attempt to arrest Gachagua will be met with resistance from our supporters nationwide,โ€ Malala cautioned.

In a separate interview on Monday morning, Malala warned that detaining Gachagua on his return could trigger protests that may disrupt the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN). He added that such an action could also damage President William Rutoโ€™s image internationally at a time when Kenya is under the global spotlight.
