Deputy President Orders Arrest of Nyeri Chief for Daytime Drinking

Saturday, July 8, Vice President Rigathi Gachagua issued an arrest warrant for a Nyeri County chief for daytime drinking at a local pub.

During his eulogy at a funeral, the DP expressed regret over the behavior of a national government administrator, stating that the action directly contradicted the government’s efforts to combat the sale of illicit alcohol, particularly in the Mt Kenya region, and address the widespread problem of alcoholism in the area.

Gachagua wondered how the administrator would perform his duties while intoxicated.

However, the Vice President refrained from disclosing the chief’s name and position. Nonetheless, the County Commander was given the necessary information to execute the arrest.

“There is a chief drinking at the bar at the moment. I will provide you with his name so you can go and arrest him. Why is he drinking at 1 p.m.? How will a drunken chief deal with the alcohol here?

You must find a replacement for him. No drunken chief will be employed by this government. They will choose between drinking and working, the DP stated.

During his speech, Gachagua alluded to the fact that he learned of the chief’s whereabouts from locals who disclosed that some residents of his home turf had his telephone number.

Additionally, the former Mathira lawmaker warned government officials against undermining the government’s resolve to combat alcoholism.

“This region’s chiefs are in trouble. “Everyone here has my contact information, and they will always tell me if you (chief) do something wrong,” he asserted.

At the time of publication, it had not yet been determined whether the County Commander was able to carry out Gachagua’s orders.

In a previous event, the DP had warned national administration officials against undermining the government’s war on drugs and alcoholism, emphasizing that the government would not hesitate to fire those who deviated from this position.

As of the 8th of July, 2023, the sale of illicit alcohol was being combated in every region of Kenya.
