Democrats in Kenya Fear What The Next Four Years Will Hold, After Trump’s U.S Election Win

In Kenya’s Westlands area, members of the Democrats Abroad organization anxiously awaited the U.S. election results, with hopes pinned on a Democratic win.

However, as results started rolling in, optimism shifted to disappointment when it became evident that Donald Trump was taking the lead.

For many Democrats residing in Kenya, the outcome sparked anxiety about the direction the U.S. might take over the next four years.

Among the concerned voices was Alexia Yun, a project manager, who expressed her mixed feelings. “I am a little disappointed, not as surprised as I was in 2016,” she stated. “It’s a bit frightening thinking about what could happen in the coming years, but, sadly, it’s not entirely unexpected.”

A key issue driving concern among Democrats abroad is the protection of abortion rights.

The 2022 Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade removed federal protections for abortion, impacting millions of American women’s access to reproductive healthcare.

This historic reversal has heightened worries among Democrats in Kenya, many of whom fear that a Trump administration could push for further restrictions on women’s rights.

Robin Emerson, the Chairperson for Democrats Abroad in Kenya, voiced these concerns, particularly regarding women’s reproductive rights.

“I am deeply worried about what a potential new administration might do, or say, concerning a woman’s body and her autonomy over reproductive health,” she said.

Democrats Abroad in Kenya is one of 52 country committees within the global Democrats Abroad organization.

This network helps U.S. citizens residing outside the country engage in American elections by providing support to ensure they can cast their ballots.

With Trump poised for another term, members of the Kenyan committee find themselves confronting what they see as a potentially regressive turn in American politics, especially for women’s rights.
