DCP Party’s Request to UN Ahead of President Ruto’s Travel to the US

The Democratic Citizen Party (DCP) has filed a petition with the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), asking it to block President William Ruto from addressing the 80th session. The party accuses Ruto of violating key human rights principles.

On Monday, August 18, DCP deputy leader Cleophas Malala urged the UN not to allow Ruto to speak, claiming that giving him a platform would legitimize dictatorship and oppress the very people of Kenyaโ€”especially the youth and womenโ€”who are only fighting for justice and accountability.

โ€œWe ask the UN General Assembly to review his eligibility to speak on peace and human rights issues,โ€ Malala said.

He further questioned Rutoโ€™s moral authority to address this yearโ€™s UNGA theme, โ€œBetter Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development, and Human Rights,โ€ pointing to accusations of human rights abuses under his administration.

    Malala challenged Ruto directly, asking:

โ€œMr. Ruto, what will you tell the UN this year in line with its principles? Will it be about extrajudicial killings, abductions, forced disappearances, corruption, illegal gold trade, or suppression of protests?โ€

The DCP accused the government of silencing peaceful demonstrations, intimidating journalists, and violating the very principles the UN was built on.

Malala also called on the United States and the international community to take tough action against Ruto. He urged the U.S., as host of the UNGA, to consider declaring him persona non grata and to boycott his international engagements.

The petition comes as President Ruto prepares to attend the UNGA session in New York, which begins on September 9, 2025.

During last yearโ€™s UNGA, Ruto pushed for radical reforms in global governance and financial systems. He argued that the current system was failing developing nations and unable to respond effectively to global economic shocks.

โ€œThe multilateral system is struggling to manage todayโ€™s complex challenges,โ€ Ruto said then, warning that the global economy risks losing progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
