DCI Seeks Arrest of Blogger Francis Gaitho Over Cybercrime Allegations
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced it is pursuing controversial blogger and political commentator Francis Gaitho for alleged violations of Kenya’s cybercrime laws.
In a statement issued on Thursday, January 2, the DCI described Gaitho as a wanted individual. “Francis Ngโangโa Gaitho is wanted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for various criminal activities,” read the notice.
Gaitho is reportedly facing charges under the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crimes Act. According to DCI, he previously failed to attend a court hearing on December 4, 2024, in a case involving accusations of publishing false information. This led the Milimani Law Courts to issue a warrant for his arrest.
The DCI further accused Gaitho of illegally sharing the personal information of a senior public officer and spreading false information against Kenyan citizens, in violation of Section 23 of the Cyber Crimes Act. The investigative body also noted that Gaitho faces additional allegations of cyber harassment linked to a social media post targeting a senior government official.

The case files are currently under review by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further action. Meanwhile, the DCI has appealed to the public for assistance in locating the blogger, urging anyone with relevant information to report anonymously via their toll-free hotline, 0800 722 203, or visit the nearest police station.
Gaitho, who has a large following as a social media influencer, has denied the allegations. He confirmed his intention to present himself at the DCI headquarters on Monday, January 7, stating, “I am not a criminal, a murderer, or a capital offender. I simply exercise my constitutional right to free speech.”
The blogger, known for his outspoken criticism of corrupt government officials, was previously arrested on October 24, 2024, but later released without charges. As his case unfolds, all eyes remain on whether the legal proceedings will have broader implications for online freedom of expression in Kenya.
