DCI Drags Bus Driver Back to Station Days to Christmas as Jirongo Crash Secrets Emerge
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released a detailed statement giving an update on the investigations into the tragic road accident that led to the death of former Cabinet minister and Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo. The DCI confirmed that the driver of the Climax Company Ltd bus involved in the crash has been summoned again for further police action.
In the statement dated December 16, 2025, the DCI clarified that early investigations have confirmed the accident took place on the night of December 13, 2025. The crash happened at the Karai area along the busy NakuruโNairobi Highway. This clarification follows widespread claims on social media that the accident scene may have been tampered with.
Police revealed that the bus driver, identified as Tyrus Githinji Kamau, had already been questioned to help with the investigations. However, he has now been instructed to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, just days before the Christmas holiday. According to the DCI, Kamau was released on cash bail and is being investigated for the offence of causing death through dangerous driving.
In an official statement, the DCI said the driver remains free on bail as investigations continue and will be required to present himself to police for further action on the stated date.

As part of the inquiry, detectives have also spoken to key witnesses, including a night guard and a fuel attendant who were on duty at a nearby petrol station on the night of the accident. Both witnesses recorded statements describing what they saw and heard before and after the crash.
Following the incident, a joint team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory was sent to the scene. The team conducted initial assessments and collected key evidence to support the investigation. CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station was also obtained and has already been reviewed.
According to the footage, Jirongo drove into the petrol station at 2:18:40am from the Nairobi side but did not stop to refuel. Shortly after, he paused at the station exit before making a right turn to head back toward Nairobi. Seconds later, at around 2:19am, a public service bus crashed into his vehicle.
The accident involved Jirongoโs car, registration number KCZ 305U, and a Climax Company Ltd bus, registration number KCU 576A. The impact was severe, pushing Jirongoโs car about 25 metres from the crash point, while the bus stopped nearly 50 metres away.
Detectives are also retracing Jirongoโs movements earlier that night and have recorded statements from people he met at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi. Investigations are ongoing, and once completed, the case file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for further guidance.
