Daring Suspect Makes It Rain: Throws Ksh25,000 Cash at Residents During Police Chase

During a police chase, a suspect in a corruption case involving an assistant commissioner threw Ksh25,000 bills at residents of Mathare.

In a statement released on Thursday, June 15, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) explained that the man was apprehended during a bribery transaction.

In addition, the statement noted that the assistant commissioner had confiscated construction materials after demolishing a house that had allegedly been constructed illegally on a road reserve.

The homeowner pleaded with the commissioner to release the materials, including iron sheets and window frames, and the commissioner agreed to do so in exchange for a Ksh50,000 bribe.

The frustrated Roysambu resident then informed EACC of the situation, and plans were immediately made for an operation.

“In a meeting at the assistant commissioner’s office on June 13, 2023, the complainant pleaded for clemency to have the Ksh50,000 demand reduced.

“The assistant commissioner agreed to reduce the amount to Ksh25,000 if the complainant paid it promptly and in full,” stated EACC.

In addition, EACC observed that the assistant commissioner requested that the resident give the money to her agent instead of delivering it directly to her.

On Wednesday, June 14, the agent arranged a meeting between the resident and himself in Mathare, where the transaction was to take place.

Officers of the EACC awaited the agent’s arrival to pounce on him.
However, after the transaction, the agent became alarmed and fled, leading EACC officers on a pursuit through the neighborhood.

EACC observed that while he was running, he threw the money at the residents, causing a commotion as those standing nearby scrambled for the Ksh1,000 notes.

“As soon as EACC pounced on the agent, who had already received the Ksh25,000, he fled into the slum, with EACC detectives hot on his heels.

“Detectives outran the suspect and were able to apprehend him, but during the struggle, he threw the money to members of the public in Mathare who were watching the unfolding events,” the statement continued.

The agent and assistant commissioner were both arrested, but the commissioner was subsequently released on bail.
