Daring Shopkeeper Dodges Bullets, Pins Down Gunman!
A gunman was forced to flee after a scuffle with a merchant in the Lions area of Trans Nzoia West, who pinned him to the ground.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), a lone robber armed with a loaded G3 rifle confronted the shopkeeper and her spouse at 6:00 a.m. as they were opening their store.
The shopkeeper, identified as Caroline Nafula, demanded that they empty the cash registers and give over the cash while raising her hands in a sign of surrender and moving closer to the gunman.
She astonished the gunman by pouncing on him and tossing him to the ground with force. Nafula deflected four bullets launched at her by the robber during the struggle.
Fearing for his life, the thief was able to escape to safety, leaving his rifle with 11 rounds of ammunition in the possession of Nafula and her husband, who notified the police.
Detectives raced to the scene and determined that the G3 rifle belonged to a Kitale Medium Prison officer stationed at the Kitale Referral Hospital on April 19, 2023, when he was guarding a sick inmate.

The DCI also praised the heroic actions of a female merchant in Nyawiso village, Ndhiwa-Homabay County, who was able to subdue a gunman who had broken into her home.
Hope Odhiambo was unwinding in her living room after closing her business when a lone robber brandished an AK-47 rifle and demanded the day’s earnings.
Not amused by the gunman’s efforts, the shopkeeper acted promptly by seizing the weapon and yelling for assistance.
Neighbors rushed to her assistance, causing the thief to flee to safety. He abandoned an AK-47 containing 30 rounds of ammunition and a dagger.
So far, investigations indicate that the weapon was seized from an AP officer assigned to the Critical Infrastructure Police Unit in Ndhiwa.
The statement read in part, “As a thorough investigation into the circumstances under which the firearms ended up in the hands of criminal gangs commences, the DCI commends the two women for their bravery and for joining the fight to rid the streets of gangsters and illegal arms.”
“We warn all citizens to put their safety first when confronted with armed robberies, and when the situation allows, as in the case of Nafula and Hope Odhiambo, not to hesitate to do the right thing,” the statement continues.
