CSs John Mbadi & Oparanya Risk Arrest After Warning

The Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare issued a stern warning to Cooperatives and MSMEs CS Wycliffe Oparanya and National Treasury CS John Mbadi for neglecting a critical committee meeting about the prolonged Ksh204 million dues battle for retired Kenya Creameries Cooperation (KCC) employees.

The committee criticized both CSs for their “grossly casual” approach to this serious matter, which has dragged on for over three decades, creating fresh obstacles for the elderly petitioners seeking their long-overdue dues.

Committee members cautioned that they would impose strict consequences if the two officials failed to attend another meeting and address the matter with the required urgency and respect.

Senator Miraj Abdullahi suggested holding them financially accountable to cover travel expenses for the petitioners, who bear significant costs only to leave empty-handed, stating, โ€œThese individuals have sacrificed to be here; those responsible for the delays should bear the expenses.โ€

More committee members advocated for tougher penalties, with Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi proposing that if the two miss a final summons, they should face arrest and monetary fines up to Ksh500,000.

CS Mbadi not only missed the meeting but also suggested dismissing the petition in a letter, claiming the Government has no obligation to pay terminal benefits or Sacco dues that KCC deducted but failed to remit.

CS Oparanya also missed the meeting, instead sending his Principal Secretary for Cooperatives, Patrick Kilemi, in his place.

Committee Vice Chair Senator George Mbugua condemned this disregard for the process as a grave injustice to the aging petitioners, pledging to pursue justice on their behalf for as long as it takes.

โ€œEven if it takes two years to resolve, we wonโ€™t stop until justice is served. These senior citizens devoted their lives to service; dismissing their plea without proper consideration is unacceptable,โ€ Mbugua said.

This commitment was shared by other committee members, including Senators Crystal Asige and Mohammed Faki, representatives from the Attorney Generalโ€™s Office, and New KCC Company Secretary Irene Mbito.
