CS Murkomen’s Committee Unveils New Recommendations for Airports After JKIA Fiasco
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed the findings of a Multi-Sectoral Technical Committee that was tasked with examining the administration of the country’s international airports.
In a Thursday-dated announcement, the CS highlighted that the team had suggested alterations designed to improve airport management, such as increasing the recruitment of personnel at the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).
Murkomen highlighted that the decision will enable improved administration of airports that have faced disputes, particularly focusing on the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
Furthermore, the committee suggested that KAA employees should sign performance agreements to improve effectiveness and professionalism.
“KAA has been struggling with a disorganized and demoralized workforce with no clearly defined roles and succession plan,” read the statement in part.
“We must insist on KAA embracing a maintenance culture and compliance with international standards and best practices.”
The team also suggested improving access roads near the airports, alongside building additional parking areas at the airport facilities.

Murkomen additionally outlined that the committee suggested the rehabilitation of runways that have been affected by flaws and structural issues.
“Others are improving airside and landside drainage systems and better managing overgrown vegetation and landscaped areas, strengthening luggage handling systems and passenger boarding bridges.
“Proposals also include modernizing firefighting systems and improving security systems through fencing and screening,” Murkomen stated.
He observed that multiple rehabilitation projects had started at JKIA, involving upgrades to the electro-mechanical systems such as the installation of new backup generators.
The repair of the leaking roofs at JKIA terminals is scheduled to be carried out soon.
As per the computer science (CS) implementation, the upcoming modifications that have not yet been put into action will start in the year 2024.
