CS Murkomen, IG Kanja and DCI boss Amin Defy Court Summons in High-Stakes Abduction Case

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Director of Criminal Investigations, and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja did not appear in court on Wednesday to respond to the recent abductions occurring in the country.

They were supposed to attend a High Court session to explain the circumstances surrounding the disappearances of six youths in December, who have since been reunited with their families.

CS Murkomen was represented by lawyer Danstan Omari, while lawyer Paul Nyamondi stood in for IG Kanja.

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Director General George Njao was scheduled to appear in court but sent Registration and Licensing Manager Collins Kipkorir in his place.

During the height of the abductions, IG Kanja asserted that the National Police Service (NPS) had no knowledge of the incidents and that national security was not implicated.

Concerns grew as Kenyans wondered how security agencies could overlook such a serious situation, including President William Ruto.

The youths are thought to have been kidnapped after posting on social media to criticize President Ruto and the government.

Among them are digital cartoonist Gideon Kibet, known as Kibet Bull, his brother Ronny Kiplangat, along with Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Steve Mbisi, and Bernard Kavuli.

On Monday, January 6, five of them were released and were seen in various locations across the country.

Kiplangat, who was taken in Nairobi, was located in Machakos County, while Kavuli, who was abducted in Ngong, was found in Kitale.

Kibet Bull was discovered in Luanda, Vihiga County after being kidnapped in Nairobi on December 24, 2024.

Steve Mbisi, who is also reported missing, has not yet been located.

So far, none of the abductees have provided detailed accounts of their experiences or disclosed information about their captors.

Manyatta Member of Parliament (MP) Gitonga Mukunji has suggested that Billy endured severe torture at the hands of his abductors.

While visiting Billy’s family after their reunion, Mukunji mentioned that an initial report indicated that whipping and restricted food portions were used as methods of abuse.
