CS Machogu Orders Inclusion of Unregistered Students in KCPE Exams

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has instructed ministry officials and all schools to allow all pupils, including those who did not register, to take the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams.

The final KCPE will be administered this year as the ministry phases out the 8-4-4 system. The current cohort is the final group to take the KCPE examinations.

This means that candidates who fail to take the exam will be compelled into the new system, which has significantly altered the curriculum.

“Since this is the last KCPE, learners shall not be disadvantaged by exclusion from the examination, on account of non-registration,” the CS noted.

“Consequently, all affected learners are advised to report to their respective schools/designated examination centers for purposes of sitting the examination on the scheduled dates.”

Candidate non-registration has been a common occurrence, with some schools failing to satisfy the deadline.

There have also been instances of institutions failing to register students despite having paid the exam fees and fulfilled all requirements.

Machogu has now instructed his ministry to take action against the officials and instructors who prevented the registration of some students, knowing full well that this was the final KCPE.

“This is a serious offense that unjustly disenfranchises learners. Appropriate action will therefore be taken against those responsible by the law,” Machogu stated.

Exams for the KCPE will begin on Monday and conclude on Wednesday.

As a result of Kenya’s education system reform in 1985, this year’s examinations will be the final in history.

The new competency-based curriculum, also known as CBC, places less emphasis on examinations and provides early access to career pathways.
