CS Kipchumba Murkomen Unveils New Changes at JKIA After Leaking Roof Shame

Five significant modifications have been declared by Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport to enhance passenger service provision.

The CS disclosed in a Thursday statement that he has issued a directive to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to procure new 3D scanners, thereby eliminating the necessity for authorities to manually inspect passengers’ luggage.

These advanced technological devices generate three-dimensional X-ray images and resemble CT scanners commonly found in medical facilities. By combining X-rays and computer technology, computed tomography (CT) scans generate images of the internal organs.

New 3D scanners will allow airport personnel to examine the contents of a bag in 360° detail while zooming in on the images.

Passengers reported leaks in terminal buildings 1B, 1C, and 1D last month, prompting the CS to mandate the replacement of their roofs.

Additionally, he stated that the newly implemented directive will safeguard the luggage and ensure the convenience of passengers.

Conversely, he issued a directive to KAA to guarantee streamlined and effective passenger processing to prevent Kenyans from missing their flights or being forced to wait in lengthy lines.

Additional directives were issued concerning the installation of canopies over vital pathways, the supply of sufficient sanitary facilities, and the delivery of supplementary secondary backup generators.

“These airports are threatened by upcoming development around them which pose safety concerns both for passengers, and the people living in these areas. I have instructed KCAA and KAA to do a comprehensive report on the structures around it with a view of security the airport lands,” the CS directed.

Wilson Airport

The CS instructed KAA to ensure that passenger drop-off and pick-up areas are provided at Wilson Airport.

In addition, Murkomen mandated that the airport administration implement primary passenger screening to improve airport and passenger safety.

“I have therefore directed the Kenya Airports Authority to commence the process of building a passenger terminal building at Wilson or acquire existing hangers, especially those whose leases have come to an end to ease congestion at the airport, in the interim.

“In addition, despite numerous contracts for the rehabilitation of the pavements at Wilson, the airport is full of patchwork, potholes, and cracks. I therefore direct KAA to completely reconstruct the pavement and the runway,” he directed.

Further modifications are anticipated to be disclosed in December, coinciding with the publication of a comprehensive report on the condition of airports.
