Court Orders Arrest of Moi’s Grandson Collins Kibet in Child Support Drama

An arrest warrant has been issued for the grandson of ex-President Daniel Moi, who has evaded court appearances for more than two months.

Nakuru Principal Magistrate Kipkurui Kibellion issued a warrant for the apprehension of Mr. Collins Kibet after he failed to comply with court summons, which demanded his presence to justify why he shouldn’t face consequences for disregarding the court’s authority.

This occurred following the revelation that the former president’s offspring couldn’t be located after disregarding court summonses, which had been extended on at least four occasions.

Mr. Steve Biko, the attorney representing Gladys Jeruto Tagi, Mr. Kibet’s former wife, informed the court that attempts to deliver the orders to Mr. Kibet were unsuccessful as his location could not be determined.

Mr. Biko informed the court that attempts to serve Mr. Kibet with the summons at his residence in Kabarak or Kabarnet Gardens in Nairobi were unsuccessful.

“We are requesting the court to issue an arrest warrant since the defendants appear to have gone under, making it difficult for us to effect the service,” said Mr Biko.

The court, in its decision, approved the request to issue an arrest warrant for Mr. Kibet and instructed the Nakuru Police station commander to carry out the orders.

“The court hereby issues a warrant of arrest against Mr Kibet who should be produced before this court. The orders should be served upon the OCS Nakuru central to enforce them,” ordered Mr Kibellion.

Mr. Kibet was anticipated to make an appearance in court on Wednesday by the court directives issued in January and renewed on four occasions.

The summons was initially issued in January and subsequently extended on at least four occasions due to the inability to locate the descendant of the former leader.

Mr. Kibet is currently undergoing contempt of court proceedings initiated by his former spouse, Gladys Jeruto Tagi. She alleges that he has failed to comply with court orders regarding their two children.

Ms. Jeruto submitted a request to have Mr. Kibet penalized for allegedly not adhering to court directives issued in June 2022. These directives mandated him to contribute to his two children’s education, medical costs, and a portion of entertainment expenses amounting to Sh 1.5 million annually.

She asserted that Mr. Kibet had consistently disregarded commands and instead left her to bear all the burden alone.

During the court proceedings, it was stated that Ms. Jeruto is experiencing financial difficulties, preventing her from meeting the needs of her children who are unable to attend school due to lack of fees. As a result, they have remained at home for the entire term.

The court initially issued a summons on February 5, demanding Mr. Kibet’s presence on February 21 to explain why he shouldn’t face imprisonment for contempt of court.

Nevertheless, his attorney, who attended the court session remotely on February 25, asserted that they had received the orders that morning, rendering it unfeasible for their client to adhere to them.

The court prolonged the directives until March 6 and subsequently prolonged them to March 13 due to his absence.

On March 19, the judge, in providing a final extension, warned the younger Moi about the consequences of disregarding court directives.

Mr. Kibet is the offspring of Jonathan Moi, who was the descendant of Daniel Moi, the second president of Kenya.
