Comedian Eddie Butita Takes Stand On Finance Bill 2024

Comedian Eddie Butita has publicly declared his opposition to the Finance Bill 2024 after being out of the public eye for nearly a week.

In a statement shared on Sunday evening, Butita revealed that he had initially expressed his concerns about the Bill privately.

However, he decided to speak out publicly following criticism of his earlier silence and absence during the protests.

Butita defended his previous stance of avoiding political involvement throughout his career.

“Over the years, I have refrained from taking political positions, but I realize now that in this situation, my status demands that I speak out,” he stated.

Regarding the Finance Bill, Butita expressed dissatisfaction, emphasizing that he had already voiced his concerns and would continue to do so in the future, as a citizen and businessman concerned for his countrymates, family, friends, and colleagues.

“In conclusion, I want to officially declare my position: I, Eddie Butita, #RejectFinanceBill2024. It’s time to listen. We cannot all be wrong,” he added.

Criticism had mounted against Butita throughout the previous week for his failure to participate in nationwide protests.

Earlier, protesters, predominantly from Generation Z, had accused Butita of being too close to the government, especially after his participation in President William Ruto’s recent State Visit to the United States.

Butita was among the delegation of over 30 accompanying Ruto during the visit at the end of May.

During their time in the US, Butita and other comedians had the opportunity to interact with international celebrities, including show host Steve Harvey.

Since returning from the trip, however, the government has fallen out of favor with the younger generation, who are eligible to vote, due to the introduction of new taxes in the Finance Bill that many consider harsh.

Despite some taxes being rescinded, protesters continue to call for the complete rejection of the Bill.
