Colonel Kasaine Ole Kuruta Shares His Healing Journey After Chopper Crash That Killed General Ogolla
Colonel Kasaine Ole Kuruta, one of the two survivors of the tragic helicopter crash that killed former Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Francis Ogolla, has spoken about his healing journey after the deadly incident.
Speaking at a memorial service held at Moi Air Base in Nairobi, Colonel Kuruta remembered his fallen colleagues and shared the emotional and physical challenges he has faced since the crash on April 18, 2024.
The crash claimed the lives of General Ogolla and nine other military officers in Sindar, Elgeyo Marakwet County. Kuruta and photographer Frankford Karanja Mogire were the only two survivors.
A Life-Changing Moment
Kuruta described the crash as a turning point in his life. He said it taught him to value time with loved ones and to live more meaningfully.
โBrother Karanja and I carry scarsโsome visible, some hiddenโbut beyond those, we carry a deep responsibility: to live fully and to live well,โ he said.
He added that surviving the crash gave him and Karanja a second chance at life, one they do not take for granted.

Honoring the Fallen Heroes
During the memorial, Kuruta reminded fellow officers and families in attendance that the fallen soldiers should be remembered for how they lived, not how they died.
โThey smiled, they loved, and they mattered,โ he said.
He gave special thanks to his wife, who stood by his side throughout his treatment at the Defence Memorial Hospital. Her support, he said, played a big part in his recovery.
โTo my beloved wife, thank you for never leaving my bedside and giving me the strength I needed,โ he said emotionally.
Another Survivor Makes Public Appearance
The other survivor of the crash, KDF photographer Frankford Karanja Mogire, made his first public appearance a day before the memorial. He was seen with President William Ruto during the unveiling of a new plaque at the Lanet Regional Hospital in Nakuru County.
His presence drew attention online, with many Kenyans expressing relief and admiration for his courage.
Remembering General Ogolla
General Francis Ogolla was mourned as a dedicated leader and respected four-star general. President William Ruto announced his death during a press briefing at State House, calling him a true patriot and a man committed to duty.
The military and the entire nation continue to grieve the loss of the brave men who served their country with honor.
