Chief Justice Martha Koome has received a nomination for the African Female Leader of the Year category, which is an ongoing recognition at the Persons of the Year Awards presented by African Leadership Magazine (ALM).

The CJ, as stated in a communication to PoliticalPulseChat, has received nominations from Africans who were afforded the chance to choose candidates in a range of categories.

The accolade is specifically designated for an African woman who has triumphed over patriarchal systems on the continent, challenging adversity to inspire and motivate other women to strive for excellence across diverse domains.

Martha Koome, an unprecedented woman to assume the position of Chief Justice in Kenya, has garnered acclaim for her efforts to champion the rights of marginalized segments of society.

In addition to Winnie Byanyima, the Executive Director of UNAIDS, and Mariam Chabi Talata, the Vice President of Benin, Koome was nominated alongside four other candidates.

The Chairperson of Standard Bank Group in South Africa, Nonkululeko Nyembezi, and the Managing Director of Lucara Diamonds in Botswana, Naseem Lahri, have also been included in the shortlist.

“The nomination of Justice Koome for the ALM Persons of the Year Awards is consistent with ALM’s tradition of presenting the sides of the continent’s leadership achievements, which hardly finds placement on global media platforms,” the statement read in part.

The resultant declaration will be predicated on the tally of ballots received by December 14, 2023.

For the past twelve years, the African Leadership Magazine has consecutively organized its annual event.

Policymakers, executives from the private sector, and other stakeholders from throughout Africa convene to deliberate on matters about the expansion and progress of the continent.

Additionally, the occasion has evolved into a renowned venue for recognizing individuals who prioritize the well-being of others and African professionals who are actively working towards a pan-African goal within their respective industries.

The Awards Ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 22 and February 23, 2024.

Chief Justice Martha Koome presides over the launch of the National Sexual and Gender Based Violence Court Users Committee (CUC) at the Shanzu Law Courts on November 30, 2022.
