Children among dead after strike hits fleeing convoy in Gaza

BBC Verify has confirmed women and young children were killed when a strike hit their vehicles as they headed away from northern Gaza.

We have verified a video filmed close to a location where a strike killed at least 12 people, including young children.

Analysis of images from the scene shows some of those who died were aged between two and five.

We estimate that more than 30 people were on board the vehicle in the video.

It was filmed before the strike we’ve been reporting on. We do not know for sure if this truck was the exact one hit in the footage we have seen from the strike.

The video started circulating on Twitter early this morning. Online software that analyses the angle of shadows tells us the video was likely filmed between 15:30 and 17:20 local time yesterday.

We know it was filmed on Salah-al-Din street, which is a major road connecting north to south Gaza.

The width and partition in the road show it must be a major road, as the wide truck shown wouldn’t fit down a residential street.

Using satellite imagery, we were able to verify the vehicle’s exact location using the position of nearby buildings and trees, and analyzing the shadows cast by residential buildings.

We also know that the attack took place south of this location. This video was filmed northeast of the attack, which is likely where the convoy would have been in the hours before it was hit.

Israel has warned 1.1m Palestinians living in north Gaza to evacuate south, and thousands have been fleeing by vehicle or on foot.

UN chief António Guterres said the call for a mass evacuation was extremely hazardous and he urged humanitarian access.

More than 1,300 people were killed in Israel last weekend when Hamas fighters crossed the border to attack civilians and soldiers.

More than 2,200 people have been killed in Israel’s bombing campaign of the Gaza Strip launched in the aftermath, Palestinian authorities say.

Gaza Death Toll Rises To 2,215 Including 724 Children: Ministry

Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip since Hamas’s attack on southern Israel one week ago have killed at least 2,215 people, including 724 children, the Palestinian territory’s Hamas-controlled health ministry said Saturday.

Some 458 women were among those killed, the ministry said. It added that 8,714 people have also been wounded after an earlier statement said at least 324 people were killed in the past 24 hours alone.
