Charity Ngilu Explains Absence from Azimio Demonstrations

Charity Ngilu, the ex-governor of Kitui, has addressed her absence from the two-week Azimio la Umoja anti-government demonstrations witnessed in various parts of the country.
Tuesday, during the burial of prominent Machakos businessman Pius Musembi, Ngilu joked that she chose to remain in the background to allow the “young ones” to participate in the “teargas experience.”

During the administration of the late President Daniel Moi in the early 1990s, she was subjected to her fair share of tear gassings, she said.

“I am aware that one of your leaders stated they cannot see Kaluki. True, you cannot see me, but I am not too far away. Moreover, I’d like to point out that those who are making this claim were recently exposed to tear gas “She stated.

“Mimi nimekunywa teargas tangu 1992 jameni (I have been teargassed since 1992 surely). Si hata these youngsters have been affected by tear gas.”

Away from the witticism, Ngilu praised the protest leaders and urged them to continue their spirited march until their demands, including a reduction in the high cost of living, are met.

“However, we are observing you. You must proceed because, in all candor, the truth is that we had an excellent plan for Azimio and outlined everything we were going to do “Ngilu said.

“As soon as they swore on the Bible, however, the others also stated that the price of Unga will decrease by Ksh.70. We have waited, but nothing has occurred “She continued.

“Therefore, I believe you are correct, and even these conversations that we are having should be transparent, as we are concerned with saving the country.”

In retrospect, Ngilu added that Kenya must return to a time when government systems worked for every Kenyan.

“When I was in that government, Raila (the leader of Azimio) was in that government, and we saw a Kenya that everyone was proud of, I believe that we must continue pushing for a Kenya that will be beneficial and good for everyone.”

Ngilu, the leader of the Narc party, is one of the coalition’s allies, along with Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, Narc-Martha Kenya’s Karua, and KANU’s Gideon Moi.
