Chaos Erupt in Kisii County Assembly Over Simba Arati’s Alleged Impeachment Push

Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) exchanged insults at the Kisii County Assembly on Wednesday, resulting in the session concluding early as the majority of MCAs fled the proceedings.

According to reports, the exchange was provoked by the woes bedeviling Kisii Governor Simba Arati, after General Service Unit (GSU) officers raided his office at Gusii Stadium on Monday, October, 30.

During the session, MCAs affiliated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) accused their United Democratic Alliance (UDA) counterparts of attempting to impeach the Governor during a past session resulting in a verbal exchange.

“There are honorable members who want to take us behind, that they want to impeach the Governor, we dare you, bring it on,” one of the ODM MCAs stated during the session.

“The GSU officers raided the Governor’s office and ransacked it, without notice nor did they have a search warrant to that effect,” another MCA stated.

ODM MCAs condemned the harassment of Governor Arati, remarking that the government is misusing security agencies for political purposes.

The MCAs affiliated with ODM demanded additional investigations and asked the national government to increase security at the county chief’s residences and offices to prevent a recurrence.

As soon as the ODM MCAs made these statements, the UDA MCAs on the opposite side of the aisle denied the allegations.

At this juncture, some MCAs began leaving the chambers, while others remained and continued to hurl insults.

On Monday, October 30, GSU officers encircled Arati’s office at Gusii Stadium and prevented the governor from entering the building.

On the same day, ODM condemned the confinement and demanded an end to what the party termed Governor harassment.

Secretary General Edwin Sifuna claimed that the Governor was unable to access his office and carry out his duties in Kisii town the previous week due to the significant presence of police officers from the General Service Unit.

In addition, the party asserted that police planned to raid Simba Arati’s private residences.
