Chaos at JKIA as DCP Supporters Clash with Police During Rigathi Gachagua’s Return

Tensions erupted at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday, August 21, 2025, when supporters of the Democratic for Citizens Party (DCP) clashed with police while welcoming former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua back from his tour of the United States.

Hundreds of loyal followers gathered at Terminal 1A, carrying placards and chanting slogans in support of Gachagua, the DCP party leader. What started as a peaceful reception quickly turned chaotic after police officers moved in to break up the crowd, citing security concerns and the lack of a permit for the assembly.

A standoff soon followed, with police forming barricades to block the supporters from accessing the arrival terminal. DCP leaders pushed forward with their procession, sparking shoving, heated exchanges, and resistance from the crowd. The confrontation caused brief disruptions at the airport, drawing attention from both travellers and passersby.

The dramatic showdown comes at a time of mounting political tension inside the ruling coalition. Gachagua and his allies in the DCP have recently intensified their criticism of the government, positioning him as a key political force ahead of the 2027 general elections.

During his U.S. trip, Gachagua held talks with diaspora communities and business leaders, fueling speculation about possible political realignments. His supporters view the tour as a strategic step to expand his influence beyond his traditional Mount Kenya stronghold.

The JKIA clash highlights the deepening rift between pro-Gachagua factions and state agencies. DCP leaders accused the government of using police to silence the opposition and vowed to escalate their activities as the country heads into a heated political season.

Gachagua returned earlier than planned, cutting short his U.S. tour to join his party in strategizing for upcoming by-elections. Political observers say these by-elections will serve as a litmus test for both the DCP and the ruling coalition in the run-up to 2027.
