Censure Motion Filed Against Deputy President Gachagua
Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has initiated a censure motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, citing what he describes as inappropriate behavior.
Known colloquially as the “crocodile eater,” Mungatana expressed that Gachagua’s actions have been inadequate, especially considering his high-ranking position.
The motion filed by Senator Mungatana emphasizes that the deputy president is constitutionally required to follow the leadership and integrity standards set for state officials.
“Article 260 of the Constitution designates the deputy president as a state officer, whose conduct must align with Article 75 of the Constitution of Kenya and the general leadership and integrity code as outlined in the Leadership and Integrity Act,” the motion states in part.
In his argument, Mungatana asserts that the deputy president serves as the primary assistant to the president, with this role representing national unity.
Thus, the deputy president is constitutionally obliged to honor the presidency and foster national cohesion.
Senator Mungatana has raised concerns about comments made by Gachagua, which he believes undermine the dignity of the state and the presidential office.

The senator claims that since Gachagua took office, he has made statements regarding public service employment, resource distribution to devolved units, and inciting some Kenyans to disregard lawful directives from county governments.
Mungatana is seeking Gachagua’s censure due to these public statements, which he argues have exacerbated tensions among Kenya’s ethnic groups.
He criticized Gachagua’s behavior as contrary to the national values and governance principles outlined in Article 10(2) of the Constitution, deeming it disrespectful to the esteemed office of the Deputy President.
This motion comes just a day after Gachagua explicitly cautioned President Ruto against engaging in betrayal politics and urged him to organize his administration.
This development follows discussions about the potential impeachment of the deputy president, supported by a faction within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
