Bribery Scandal Hits Machakos County Assembly Over CEC Nomination
Bribery allegations have rocked the Machakos County Assembly after the majority’s appointment committee approved Annastacia Munyaka as the County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Water and Sanitation.
Bribery Claims Emerge During Vetting
During a session discussing Munyaka’s vetting report, some Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) exposed bribery claims, with a few admitting they received at least Ksh.20,000 to support her appointment.
MCA Brian Kisila shocked the assembly when he claimed he had received money from Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka. Kisila even revealed the exact time of the transaction, saying it was meant to influence his decision.
Call for Investigation Into Nominee’s Integrity
Despite these allegations, the majority still approved Munyaka’s nomination. However, a group of dissatisfied MCAs is now demanding an investigation into her qualifications, integrity, and the bribery allegations involving the clerk’s office and some MCAs.
Mathatani Ward MCA Francis Kavyu raised concerns about the clerk’s office, questioning why the nominee’s integrity was missing from the report. He warned that corruption in the assembly would negatively impact Machakos residents by allowing unqualified officers to take up critical roles.
Majority Leader Defends Himself
In response, Majority Leader and Machakos Central MCA Nicholas Nzioka criticized Kisila, who had confirmed receiving money from him. Nzioka claimed he had sent money to Kisila over 34 times and asked him to clarify the reasons behind the transactions.
Mua Ward MCA Francis Ngunga also called on the Majority Leader to explain how the marks were allocated to approve Munyaka’s nomination.
Speaker Orders Investigation
Following the heated debate, the Speaker of the Assembly has ordered an inquiry into the nominee’s integrity, educational background, and the bribery allegations. The investigation aims to uncover the truth and ensure accountability within the Machakos County Assembly.
