On Tuesday, Brian Mwenda, a young Kenyan accused of impersonating an attorney and practicing law without a valid license, was questioned by detectives at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road.

After 10 hours of interrogation by the DCI, the suspect, who was accused of falsifying his academic credentials to pursue a career, denied the allegations.

Mwenda, who was accompanied by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, exhorted his sympathizers and well-wishers to continue supporting him as he awaits the results of the DCI and Law Society of Kenya (LSK) investigations.

“I cannot disclose much due to the ongoing investigations, but all I can say is maybe this was for a greater purpose. Let’s see how it ends, and keep praying for me,” Mwenda stated.

He also hailed Kenyans for their support, including former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and the member of the Kenya Universities Students’ Organisation (KUSO) who accompanied him to DCI.

Francis Atwoli, secretary general of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Kenya), was also praised for defending the suspect against the accusations made by Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Eric Theuri.

Mwenda was also accompanied by a member of the Kenya Universities Students’ Organisation (KUSO) who voiced support for the impostor attorney.

After being interrogated, Mwenda recorded a statement at the Muthaiga Police Station before being released on Ksh100,000 parole. On Wednesday, he is expected to appear before the Milimani Law Courts to enter a plea.

The controversial teen who garnered international attention for practicing law in court without a valid license also disclosed future ambitions to run for political office.

Sonko, for his part, emphasized that he would support Mwenda until the conclusion of the trial and ensure that he continues to study and practice law.

“I have been helping before even before I became a governor. Brian is a Kenyan and I will be with him till the end. To me he has committed no offence yet, innocent until proven guilty,” he stated.

Earlier, the president of the Law Society of Kenya, Eric Theuri, reiterated that university student Mwenda impersonated a lawyer and should be imprisoned as a deterrent for future impersonators.

Mwenda’s father, Arnold Njagi, disagreed with LSK hours later, insisting that his son earned a diploma in criminology in 2016 and a degree in law from Strathmore University the following year.

According to his father, Mwenda graduated from the Kenya School of Law (KSL) and was enrolled in the bar in December 2022.
