Bolt Blunder: Unchecked License Plates Result in Ciku Muiruri’s Daughter’s Abduction
The safety of Bolt’s passengers has once more become a source of controversy for the taxi-hailing company.
Investigations have revealed that the two women rescued in Thika, one of whom is the daughter of media personality Ciku Muiruri, ordered a taxi via Bolt’s mobile app.
Ms. Muiruri’s 26-year-old daughter Erica Njeri and her 27-year-old friend Shanice Agose were rescued in Kiambu on Sunday, four days after they went missing while attending a house party in Westlands, Nairobi.
In a statement released on Tuesday. Bolt management blamed the victims for failing to check the details of the vehicle. That picked them up to see if it matched the vehicle with which they were matched on the app.
“We strongly discourage the use of vehicles that do not match the specifications listed on the platform, as this was one of the contributing factors to this unfortunate incident… “At the time of pick-up, drivers are encouraged to confirm that the driver and vehicle registration details on the app match those on the app,” reads a portion of the statement.

In addition, the company has stated that its driver and rider apps include an SOS emergency button. That can be used at any time during an active trip to alert security and/or emergency medical assistance.
As a result of the issues that have arisen. The company has encouraged its customers to verify that the driver and vehicle registration details on the app match those at the time of pickup. The company now claims that the driver who picked up the two women provided false information.
“We immediately prevent drivers from engaging in this conduct. “We’ve also added a driver selfie check feature to the platform to increase safety and prevent driver impersonation and account sharing,” the company explained.
During the rescue operation in Thika, the suspects’ crude weapons and counterfeit license plates were recovered.
On Monday, detectives from Nairobi and the Thika Police Station in Kiambu announced a breakthrough in the abduction case.
The kidnappers initially demanded Shl million for the release of the two middle-aged women. But reduced the ransom to Sh500,000, with each woman paying Sh250,000. According to a detective who was a member of the team that located them.
