Blunder That Led to Arrest of Wanted Politician In A Plane at JKIA

Saturday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detailed how its agents tracked down a wanted politician who had been suspected of operating a fraudulent gold scheme for months.

According to the investigative agency, the politician who ran for a parliamentary seat in the 2022 elections evaded police for months before booking a flight from Nairobi to Kisumu on Friday, October 6.

After the politician scheduled the flight using his information at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), detectives learned of his itinerary and sprang into action.

At the time of his arrest, the politician had already boarded the aircraft, according to the DCI.

“He was ejected from a Kisumu-bound flight yesterday afternoon by hawk-eyed detectives who had gotten wind of his last-minute travel itinerary.

“The suspect has been engaging detectives in cat and mouse games and is wanted in connection to a case where he defrauded two Thai nationals over Ksh13 million in a fake gold deal,” DCI detailed in its report.

After the arrest, detectives also conducted an operation at the suspect’s Lavington residence, where they recovered several items, including gold-looking bars and export seals.

DCI added that the politician was also detained following the capture of his accomplice in August. According to the reports, the accomplice assisted the police in locating the suspected suspect.

Before receiving payment from Thai nationals, the duo was allegedly posing as gold merchants.

Detectives added that the duo’s operations were well-planned, as they once persuaded foreigners to fly into the country in April for a bogus business transaction. However, the pair did not fulfill their vow.

After falling victim to the syndicate, the foreigners reported the incident to the Royal Thai Embassy, which then requested assistance from DCI.

The politician is currently being held at the Buruburu Police Station pending his judicial appearance on Monday.

Items recovered from a fake gold dealer’s house in Lavington on October 7, 2023.
